Eindhoven as an events city — design, technology and industrial ambition

Eindhoven is not the events city you consider. It is the events city you discover — and then choose more often than you expected.

The Eindhoven identity: from factory town to design lab

Philips made Eindhoven great. When Philips contracted, Eindhoven reinvented itself. The result is a city with one of the highest concentrations of design studios, tech scale-ups and creative agencies per square kilometre in Europe. Dutch Design Week — every year in October — draws more than 350,000 visitors to a city of 230,000 inhabitants. That says something.

ASML, ASML and ASML again. The manufacturer of chip-making machines that drives the global semiconductor industry is headquartered in Veldhoven — two kilometres from the city centre. That makes Eindhoven the technological heart of Dutch industry.

The sectors that define Eindhoven

Design and the creative industries. Design Academy Eindhoven, Dutch Design Week, the presence of Philips Design, DAF and dozens of renowned design studios. There is no city in the Benelux where design is so deeply embedded in business culture.

High tech and semiconductors. ASML, NXP, Prodrive, KMWE — Eindhoven is a cluster of technology companies that drives the global high-tech supply chain. Events on manufacturing innovation, semiconductors and Industry 4.0 find a uniquely fitting context here.

Automotive. DAF Trucks, multiple Tier-1 automotive suppliers and an automotive ecosystem deeply rooted in the Brabant industrial tradition.

Smart city and mobility. Eindhoven experiments with smart city applications like no other Dutch city. Intelligent traffic lights, data-driven urban planning — the city is its own laboratory.

The venues that set Eindhoven apart

Strijp-S. The former Philips factory complex transformed into a cultural and creative quarter. High ceilings, industrial architecture, a distinctive atmosphere. Eindhoven's finest event venue for events where industrial heritage and creative ambition converge.

Dutch Design Week venues. Every October, Eindhoven transforms dozens of locations into exhibition and event spaces. Outside October, many of these venues are available for hire. Enquire through the Dutch Design Week bureau.

Evoluon. The iconic flying-saucer building that Philips constructed as a science museum. Now a conference centre with an unrivalled architectural identity. Capacity up to 1,000 persons.

Van Abbemuseum. The museum of modern art offers spaces for private events. The context of contemporary art and design is unique.

Accessibility

Eindhoven Airport operates direct flights to more than 30 European destinations. A serious option for events with European attendees — smaller than Schiphol but more efficient for many routes.

By train: Amsterdam (1h20), Utrecht (45 minutes), Den Haag (1h10). Slower than journeys between Randstad cities, but perfectly acceptable for half-day and full-day events.

By car: Eindhoven sits directly on the A2 and A67 motorways, linking Noord-Brabant with the Randstad and Germany. Parking is easier and cheaper than in Amsterdam or Rotterdam.

When Eindhoven is the right choice

For events in the design, high tech, automotive or smart city sectors — no other city offers such an authentic context. For events where industrial heritage and innovation ambition need to set the visual tone. For events with European attendees travelling via Eindhoven Airport. For events that can use Dutch Design Week as a backdrop.

When Eindhoven does not work

For events with predominantly intercontinental international attendees — Schiphol is a long way off. For events in sectors with no connection to Eindhoven's sectoral identity. For events where Randstad networks are the priority.

The honest conclusion

Eindhoven is an events city for people who know what they are doing. Those who choose it deliberately for its sectoral identity will find an environment no other city can offer. Those who consider it merely as a cheaper version of Amsterdam are missing the point entirely.
