Amsterdam as an events city — when it's worth it and when it isn't

Amsterdam is the most booked events city in the Benelux. That says something about its appeal — and also about the lack of critical thinking.
Because Amsterdam is not always the best choice. It is, however, always the easiest one.
Why Amsterdam draws
The city has three qualities that no other Benelux city combines to the same degree. International accessibility via Schiphol — for events with overseas delegates, that is irreplaceable. A density of high-quality event venues found nowhere else in the Netherlands: from canal houses to ship sheds, from museum halls to ultra-modern conference centres. And a brand power that fills the city with anticipation before an event even begins.
Delegates who travel to Amsterdam for an event already arrive in a different frame of mind. The city communicates something about the organisation that chose it.
The Amsterdam themes that lend themselves to events
Amsterdam has a number of substantive domains in which it is authentically strong. Creativity and innovation — the city has a concentration of creative industries, tech scale-ups and design agencies that is unmatched anywhere in the Netherlands. Sustainability — Amsterdam is at the forefront of circular economy initiatives, and that context strengthens events that take sustainability seriously. International trade and finance — the Zuidas, the Amsterdamse Effectenbeurs, the presence of international headquarters.
An event on supply chain management sits differently in Amsterdam than it does in Tilburg. Not necessarily better — but differently. The city plays an active role in the content.
The four venue types that make Amsterdam unique
Canal houses. Narrow, monumental, comfortably accommodating up to 80 people. Ideal for boardroom events, intimate dinners and executive meetings where the historic surroundings make a statement. Accessibility for people with disabilities is a structural issue — always check.
Industrial venues in Noord and West. The NDSM-werf, the Westergasfabriek, the Heineken Experience, the Beurs van Berlage. Large spaces, high ceilings, strong character. Well suited to product launches, large conferences and events where the venue itself needs to make a statement that reinforces the content.
Museum venues. Stedelijk Museum, Eye Filmmuseum, Rijksmuseum (for special events). Unique context, waiting lists, premium price point. Well suited to events where culture and business converge.
Zuidas/Schiphol area. Functional, international, efficient. No particular character but maximum accessibility. Well suited to international delegations where logistics take precedence over experience.
When Amsterdam is the right choice
For events with more than 30% international delegates — Amsterdam is the only Benelux city with the international infrastructure that demands. For events where the city's brand power adds substance — creativity, innovation, international business. For events where a distinctive venue is part of the message. For events where cross-sector networking is the goal — Amsterdam has the sector density and informal culture that facilitates it.
When Amsterdam is not the right choice
If delegates are predominantly travelling from elsewhere in the Netherlands — Utrecht is logistically more efficient. If the budget is tight — Amsterdam is on average 30–40% more expensive than comparable venues elsewhere. If the venue plays no role in the content of the event — you are paying for prestige without relevant added value. If parking is essential for a large proportion of delegates — Amsterdam has a structural shortage of parking capacity at event venues.
The costs nobody tells you about
The published room hire rate is the starting point, not the final figure. Parking costs for speakers and suppliers (who always arrive early and leave late). Service charges of 15% on catering that are not always included in the quote. Venue fees for the foyer or outdoor space that are not included in the room rate. And the hidden cost in time: congestion on the A10 on a Thursday morning is not an occasional inconvenience but a structural planning factor.
The honest advice
Amsterdam is the right choice when you consciously select the city for what it offers. If you choose it simply because it is the default — consider questioning that default.
Utrecht, Rotterdam, Den Haag and even Eindhoven offer better value for specific events. Amsterdam wins on international appeal, venue diversity and the sense that something is about to happen. That counts for a great deal — but not for every event is it enough.
